To successfully publish to the Kindle platform, your book needs to be in the correct format. There are various ways to accomplish this. If you are proficient with HTML you can use Amazon’s own KindleGen software tool. Versions are available for Windows, Linux and Mac.

Download the current version from: KDP Tools and Resources.

If you use Adobe InDesign, you can download a beta plugin to convert your documents into the Kindle format.

Another great tool that takes your Word document and converts it into Kindle and ePub formats is the Instant Formatter. This is an online software where you can purchase credits to convert your books as necessary. As well as converting into the required Kindle format it can also convert your book into the ePub format.

This is the format normally required to publish to places outside of Kindle. Other tools that you can use to format your book include:

  • Scrivener
  • Mobipocket Creator
  • Word
  • Calibre

To upload your Word document you will need to save your project as a Web Page Filtered html doc. Just use the Save As function in word to find this format.
